Model United Nations 2014
Belgrano Day School has been participating in Model United Nations programs for almost ten years. Secondary students represent delegations belonging to various countries and debate different international issues. Among the students participating this year are Delfina Cappa, Alex Mysler and Matías Martino from S6, Candela Kalaidjian, Martina Freire, Sofía Terán, Yael Kohan from S5, and Lucas Reynoso, Valentina Cappa and Lola Romero, from S4.
Once again the conference will be organized by ESSARP, at Michael Ham Memorial College of Nordelta, on June 27th and 28th. This time we will be representing the Russian Federation and the Netherlands. The main issue will be “Latin America: Transformations and challenges”.
This year, there will be four General Assembly Commissions: GA1 (Disarmament and International Security): Use of drones in counter-terrorism. GA2 (Economic and Financial): Further facilitating access of Latin American countries to the markets of developed countries; GA3 (Social, humanitarian and cultural): Improving human rights for those living in extreme poverty; GA6 (Legal): Monitoring the application of the law concerning trans-boundary aquifers and other water resources.
The Security Council will be addressing the question concerning Haiti and post-conflict peace building. ECOSOC will deal with advancing youth empowerment for sustainable development in Latin America and developing the relationship between Latin Regional communities. The Human Rights Commission will discuss sponsoring economic and educational opportunities for women and girls in rural Latin America and the topics of economic growth, urbanization and the rights of children.
As usual, our students will have to research their countries and become experts on their topics. I am confident that the debates will be passionate and inspiring and that our students will profit from them.
