English News!

Some long overdue congratulations and announcements from the English Department… and the latest, too!

Public Speaking
First of all, congratulations to Melanie Lehmann, from S6S, for her participation in this year’s National Public Speaking Competition, organized by the English Speaking Union. The topic was “To define is to limit”, and Melanie gave a very moving speech entitled “Says Who?”.

Debate
Next, in mid-April, both our Junior and Senior Debate teams won their first round of debates for the Oak and Acorn Debate Cups. They will be debating again at the end of this month. So,  congratulations and good luck to Clara Pallotta, Manuela Sánchez Decotto, Nacho Triaca, Santi Comes, Florencia Gadea and Ana Cruz.

ESSARP Senior Forum
A group of 10 Senior students attended this event, held annually at Northlands, Olivos. We were invited as audience members, and the group, who regularly attend the Model UN Club, took this opportunity to practise their Language by asking questions of the panel. They were congratulated on their participation. The group was accompanied by their Debate and Model UN coach, Old Facrectean Roberto Pérez Vega (class of 2005).

ESSARP Junior Forum
This event, held later in June, is also hosted by Northlands. We were invited as panellists this time. Lucía López Farías (M2C) and Santiago Comes (M2D) proposed that “Students should be allowed to choose their own method of assessment”, and won the debate! Junior members of the Debate Club attended as audience members, to ask interesting questions, and to support their fellow BDS students up on the stage.

Creative Writing: Contest & Club

The annual ESSARP Creative Writing Competition was held here, as it is now done online. Results will be in after the Winter Holidays. We wish the very best to our creative writers: Lucía Tissera, Santiago Comes, Florencia Gadea, Julieta Feraud, Carolina Baglioni, and Nicole Kohan.

The Creative Writing Workshop, with Janet Lenton, started on Friday, June 2. The club will be meeting every two weeks. The numbers keep growing and there will be more joining in after the play is done. We invite everyone who wishes to learn or improve their writing and have fun in the process too!
