Why we tell stories…

The story-teller is the life-line between the tale and the listener, and oral story-telling is a special kind of experience for children and teachers. The linguistic devices of repetition, alliteration, musical refrains, rhymes and conventional metaphores can be used to support and enrich the memories of tellers and listeners. These features have an inmense impact on the quality of language. Good story-telling sessions are magical because no books or pictures come between the participants and the tale. Imagination has to work on words, emotional tone, vocal changes, eye contact, facial expressions and gesture.
Listening to stories extends and enriches children's taste for language and introduces them to the unique voices and worlds of many authors.
