English in action!

[gallery link="file" columns="2" ids="32360,32361,32362,32363,32364,32365,32366,32367"] English News in Middle and Senior Well, rain or shine, the English Department has been busy, busy, busy! And it has not been only Language, Literature and exam preparation. Here’s what we have been up to. New Faces! Some of our former teachers are trotting the globe, embarked on new pursuits, so we have three new members in our staff: Amanda Paladín-Forrester (full-timer), Carina Menán (Senior) and Marina Ceppi (Debate).  Welcome, teachers! Debate The year started with our super Senior Debate Team, Alejo Gonzálea Virgili, Lucas Reynoso (both from S6H) and Mercedes Mariño (S6L), participating in the Panamerican Debate Championship in Vancouver, Canada, as a part of our National Debate team. The 24 members of the National Team had been selected out of the 337 students who participated in the 2015 National Debate Championship, during which they had obtained points for their performance. There was also a final selection interview, in which the candidates were tested on their knowledge of current affairs and their ability to think quickly and argue on a variety of controversial topics. What is next for these talented debaters? They have been preselected for the World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC) that will take place in Stuttgart, Germany, in July 2016! We wish them success in their final interviews, next Saturday, May 7. Debate – Acorn Cup 2016 Congratulatios to BDS Junior and Senior Debate teams,  who won their respective debates in the first round of the Acorn Interschool Cup, hosted by Islands International School last Monday, April 25. Our Junior Team: Florencia Gadea (M3C),  Clara Palotta (M1C) and Manuela Sánchez de Coto (M1A) debated and won the motion "This Hose Believes that unvaccinated children should not be allowed to attend school" on the proposition side, against Instituto Nuestra Señora de las Nieves. Our Senior Team debated and won the motion "THBT teachers should not be allowed to go on strike" on the opposition side, against Martín Buber School. Well done! English Speaking Union – Annual Public Speaking Competition, April 19, 2016 The theme for this year’s competition, organized by the English Speaking Union and hosted by the British Embassy, was “Integrity has no need of rules”. Mercedes Mariño (S6L) made a brilliant presentation entitled: “Who will set the rules?” and then answered questions from the judges. She received warm congratulations from both judges and teachers from other participating schools. Good job, Mechi! ESU Public Speaking logos Creative Writing Belgrano Day School was one of a select group of schools in Argentina invited by the Embassy of Ireland to participate in their Creative Writing Competition. St Brendan’s College and the Irish Embassy got together to celebrate 50 years since the creation of our neighbor school, and to commemorate 100 years of the Easter Rising, a historical milestone which marks the turning point in the fight for Irish independence from British rule, which was finally declared in 1919. The competition was held on April 29, at St Brendan’s, and BDS was represented by three talented young writers: Santiago Comes (M1D), Florencia Gadea (M3C) and Michael Page (S5S). We will keep you posted on the results. This year, the ESSARP Creative Writing Competition will see a change in format, though not in spirit. The aim is still to encourage a love of writing and Literature, and to nourish a form of expression that channels ideas and emotions in a way that enriches both writers and readers. But this year, they’ll be doing it on line! On Wednesday, May 11, from 2:00 to 4:00 BDS participants will writing in room 105, here, at home. Our writers’ names: Lucìa Tissera and Ilan Cohan (P6), Santiago Comes (M1D), Santino Galluppo (M2B), Carolina Baglioni (S4A), Vicky Romero (S4A), Michael Page (S5S) and Luz Mautner (S5S). Happy writing to all of them! 400 Years since Shakespeare’s Death No, we had not forgotten. And our beloved bard is everywhere: M1 has made presentations on Elizabethan Drama and is now reading an abridged version of Macbeth; M2 will soon be teary-eyed over the suffering of “star-crossed lovers” Romeo and Juliet; and S6 are studying the tragedies of Antony and Cleopatra and Othello. In Drama, Yaiza is working with L students on famous fragments and soliloquies from different plays. And we are also working on the facts, not just the fiction. In Language, students are working on news reports and opinion articles on his life and the many reasons why Shakespeare is still relevant today. And there is more to come on this very important commemoration. Keep your eyes open! Gaby Correa- Coordinator of English, Middle & Senior

Forthcoming ESSARP Model United Nations (EMUN)

0316_Model UNAs mentioned in an earlier post, the Model United Nations programme is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the UN agenda. The participants role play as diplomats representing a country in a simulated session of an organ or committee of the UN. Participants have to research a country, investigate international issues and then develop solutions to world problems. During the conference, participants must employ a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of their country. Just like last year, the EMUN will take place at St. Alban’s College in Lomas de Zamora, on June 24th and 25th,  2016. We were assigned three delegations: Belgium, Ecuador and Estonia. This year 15 students will participate: Federico Mysler, Franco Panighini, Macarena Paulos, Pablo Pociecha, Mijal Cannizaro, Pietro Marotta, Camila Kim, Carolina Baglioni Burgos y Nicole Kohan of S4, and Julieta Perelman, Pilar Di Salvo, Daniela Riggio, Camila Quintana, Luz Mautner and  Florencia Azambuja of S5. Two students, Valentina Cappa and Ana Paula Velastegui, volunteered to act as student officers to chair The Special Conference of Global Sharing and the Human Rights Council; and a former student, Alex Mysler, will be the General Assembly’s President. Topics and challenges The topics to be debated  this year are the following: GA1 Disarmament:
  • The issue of drug-trafficking cartels in Latin America.
  • The media in the context of international security.
GA3 Social, Humanitarian and Cultural:
  • The issue of temporary housing for refugees.
  • Combating the use of mercenaries as a means of violating human rights and impeding the exercise of the right of peoples to self determination.
GA4 Special Political and Decolonization:
  • Measures to prevent international recruitment from terrorist organizations.
  • Offers by Member States of study and training facilities for inhabitants of Non-Self Governing Territories.
ECOSOC:
  • Improving coordination efforts to combat human trafficking.
  • Question of the use of cross-border tax avoidance by multinational corporations.
Environment Commission (EC):
  • Monitoring the use of bio-technology.
  • The question of international cooperation on water recycling.
Human Rights Council (HRC):
  • Promoting international cooperation to protect human rights of street children in major cities.
  • Ensuring girls' access to education in less developed countries (LEDCs).
Special Conference on Global Sharing:
  • Strengthening efforts to develop a green economy.
  • Strengthening efforts to prevent malnutrition.
There is no doubt that our students will profit immensely from this experience and will also have a lot of fun. Model United Nations has become an essential part of BDS and it is exciting for me to see how students are ready to take on the extra work it entails with enthusiasm and responsibility.
Testimonials: 10 April "After a long Saturday at the Kotisas country house in Pilar, a suburb of Buenos Aires, much of the group reconvened for lunch in Recoleta, one of the neighborhoods downtown. After an Italian lunch in the Recoleta Mall, the group walked through the neighborhood feria, stopping by churro vendors, local artisans, musicians, and an older church. More of the group tagged along for the last sight of the day, Floralis Genérica, one of the most famous porteñan sculptures, the first of several to be built. Those who didn’t go to Recoleta spent their time touring other barrios, like San Telmo, known for its older style and street fair (as well as its street fair). The whole Payton group met up at Café de los Angelitos around 9:30 for an incredible tango show (it took 17 dancers, singers, and musicians, not the cliché 2) which was full of dangerous moves and what seemed like VERY close calls. The show ended in time for everyone to return home and eat a quick dinner before heading to bed with an early wake-up in the morning. Everyone is looking forward to their first full day in the city tomorrow!" Jacob, Kate & Lila 11 April "Today was our first day going to BDS. All the teachers and students were very welcoming and excited to have us there. We toured the school and played some games in the courtyard, then left for the jardín japonés (Japanese garden), which was beautiful and tranquil (...) " Leah 13 April "Yesterday some of us went to Recoleta(a neighborhood in Buenos Aires) and past through a market. I bought beautiful souvenirs and an umbrella because it was drizzling. It was also as the Argentineans would say “fresco.” Not too warm and maybe even a little chilly. We ate a delicious meal together near the top floor of a mall on a patio. Afterwards we simply strolled around Recoleta, taking in the intricate architecture that is a beautiful mix of European and Latin American. We eventually saw the huge metal flower up close. While the whole day was very relaxing the most incredible part was the tango. Last night we went to the most stunning, breath taking, and heart stopping tango show. From the beautiful costumes to the swift smooth moves everything was incredible." Isabel

[gallery link="file" columns="2" ids="31968,31969,31970,31971"] "In this conference I had an amazing new experience. I met lots of people from different countries, with different traditions and habits. I learnt about leadership and democracy through different interesting activities, and enjoyed doing environmental and service projects!" (Clara Hortal) "It's amazing how quickly we formed a bond with these people all over the world and how fast it changed us, it was incredible! But I noticed the change afterwards...  While during the Conference I thought I was just fooling around and having fun! "(Francisco Blasón) "This Round Square Conference was an unforgettable experience which, through fun activities, taught me a lot about other cultures, friendship, trust and leadership skills that changed me as a person!" (Daniela Riggio) "I can't find words to describe this trip. Everything meant excitement, adventure, discovering new things, fun. Each day and activity surprised us. Los Angeles brought us new friendships and a different point of view towards things. It was amazing!" (Florencia Azambuja) Thank you, Chadwick! Thank you, Round Square!
