Exchanges: Canadian student visits BDS

RSWelcome to our school, Mikayla Mangotich, from St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School, Ontario, Canadá! We hope you'll enjoy every minute of your stay in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and look forward to your testimonial and photos! St. Mildred's is also a Round Square Member School. BDS' hostess student, Micaela Diven (Senior 4), will in turn be travelling to Canada during our forthcoming summer holidays 2016.

A visit to the Embassy

We were able to schedule a meeting at the embassy of New Zealand for Thursday August 20th and our delegates at THIMUN interviewed Mr. Hayden Montgomery, ambassador since March 2013. They asked him questions related to their topics and discussed New Zealand`s foreign policy. [gallery link="file" columns="2" ids="29576,29577,29578,29579"] He told us that the foreign relations of New Zealand are oriented toward developed democratic countries and emerging Pacific economies. The government has been active in promoting free trade, nuclear disarmament and arms control. He was very proud of the fact that his country was ranked  the second least corrupt country in the world from a list presented by Transparency.org among 175 countries. The students asked lots of questions and the ambassador talked about childhood obesity, sustainable agriculture, cyber surveillance, New Zealand’s rather cold relations with the Russian Federation due to this country’s claims over Crimea, etc. At the end of the interview, the ambassador presented the students with caps, pins, maps, brochures and even a folder of declassified information issued by the Security Council, as New Zealand has been elected as a non permanent member of the Council for this term. There can be no doubt that this visit proved to be a very enriching experience! We are very grateful that we had the chance to meet Mr. Montgomery. new-zealand-flag

Cambridge News

Logo CIE Fellow Centre-baja Earlier this month very good results were received from Cambridge for those S6 students who sat for History, Literature in English and Mathematics at A/S level. In each subject the highest grade A was achieved reflecting the commitment and hard work of some candidates and the detailed preparation offered  by members of staff. Congratulations to all. During the week 14 September students will have their mock examinations (practice examinations) in preparation for the real ones that take place in October and November. All students from M1 and S4 will participate while in S5 and S6 only those taking examinations later in the year will have this opportunity. Following on from the ESSARP Conference that takes place at the end of August BDS will host on Monday 31 August Michael O’Sullivan, CEO of Cambridge International Examinations. During his visit he will attend an English class and then meet with authorities of the school. He will be accompanied by Richard Gilby, Head of Cambridge Examinations throughout Lain America and Lucila Marquez, Senior Schools Development Manager, Latin America. BDS’s relationship with Cambridge goes back almost a hundred years when students sat for their “Cambridge Locals”. This is chronicled in the 1916 edition of "The Evergreen". We were able to schedule a meeting at the embassy of New Zealand for Thursday August 20th and our delegates will be able to interview Mr. Hayden Montgomery, ambassador since March 2013. They will ask him questions related to their topics and discuss New Zealand`s foreign policy. This will no doubt be a very enriching experience. Human Rights, Peace Education and a special guest [gallery link="file" ids="29529,29530,29531,29532,29533"] Last Thursday, Monica Shah, a Washington DC teacher visited our school. She is a teacher at Brightwood Education Campus, where she has taught U.S. History & Geography, and now also teaches Human Rights and "Peace classes", at different school grades. She also runs the Student Government and Model UN clubs. Before coming to Argentina, she was in India for three weeks to participate in a Peace Education and Nonviolence Immersion program. She is working with Freedom Beat to promote nonviolence, social change through music, and conflict solving. We invited her to attend one of Fabiana Burgos' classes in S5H (Formación Ética y Ciudanana, FEyC and Derecho/ Law), as Human Rights is part of her syllabus. Monica spoke to the students about her work to promote non violence and invited the class to participate in an exercise she puts into practice with her students. She asked them to place five chairs at the front of the classroom and then asked for volunteers to move them around into a position to show power.  The students participated in the activity very enthusiastically and then they had to explain what power meant to them and justify the way they had placed the chairs to reflect this. This led to a fruitful debate on the meaning of the word power. The students enjoyed Monica`s visit and continued debating on the topic even after she had left. We thank Monica for her interesting input and wish her all the best in her pursuit to make the world a better place. Monica Bruck - Head of Humanities, Middle & Senior

"13" -Music and Lyrics by  Jason Robert Brown Book by  Dan Elish and Robert Horn.  Funciones: viernes 26 y sábado 27 de junio; viernes 3 y sábado 4 de julio, a las 21 hs.  En breve, se informará sobre la venta anticipada de entradas. 0515_Cast Play 13
