Model UN x 2 + General Knowledge Competition

ESSARP Model and International Model United Nations

The Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the UN agenda. The participants role play as diplomats representing a country in a simulated session of an organ or committee of the UN. Participants have to research a country, investigate international issues and then develop solutions to world problems. During the conference, participants must employ a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of their country.

This year 11 students participated: Delfina Cappa,  Alex Mysler and Matías Martino from S6, Sofía Terán, Martina Freire, Candela Kalaidjian and Malena Fronza from S5, and Mercedes Mariño, Lucas Reynoso, Ana Paula Velástegui and Valentina Cappa, from S4.

The Model UN was organized by ESSARP Centre and as all the participating schools were bilingual, the debates were carried out in English. It was a wonderful experience and we profited immensely from it. We were assigned the Russian Federation and the Netherlands and discussed topics like drones and counter terrorism, rights of women and children, environment and political issues, like the crisis in Haiti and the Ukraine. The Model lasted two days, Friday June 27th. and Saturday the 28th and was held at Michael Ham Memorial College, Nordelta. The General Assembly, the Security Council, the Human Rights Commission and the ECOSOC, all were able to pass resolutions on each of the debated topics.

We worked very hard, became experts on some of the topics and at the same time had fun and met girls and boys from other schools. We are already looking forward to the International Model (THIMUN) l to take place in Montevideo in August.
