English Speaking Union

Juan Bautista Sosa (S6H) represented BDS at the English Speaking Union National Public Speaking Competition 2014, held at the British Embassy on Tuesday 22nd April 2014. The topic this year was “Imagination is More Important than Knowledge”. Juan wrote a speech entitled “What I’ve learned from Lego Blocks, TV Shows and my Mother”, which he delivered brilliantly in front of a panel of judges and an audience which included teachers, family members and students from the 29 participating schools.

Congratulations to Juan on a very insightful speech and a wonderful presentation!

Debate

The first round of the Acorn Interschool Debate Cup was held on Tuesday, May 6, at Oxford High School. The Senior Team, Mercedes Mariño, Lucas Reynoso and Alejo González Virgili (S4C), debated against St Catherine’s. The motion was “This House Believes that peoples’ right to self determination should always be respected “, and BDS had the opposition side.

The Junior team, Ana Cruz(M3C), Michael Page (M3A) and Pablo Pociecha (M2C), debated against Southern Cross School. The motion was “This House Believes that children should not be allowed to participate in reality shows”, and, once again, BDS had the opposition side.

Seniors lost, but the Juniors won the debate by a unanimous decision of the judges! Congratulations to all of them for a job well done.

ESSARP Creative Writing Competition

Each year, eight BDS students participate in the ESSARP Creative Writing Competition and, more often than not, they bring home several prizes! This year’s competition was held on May 12th at St Brendan’s College.  Results are not in yet, so we’ll have to wait and see, but there is no doubt that whatever our students chose to write, it must have been exciting and imaginative. Here are their names:

Facundo Cavigllia, P6
Olivia Robins, P6
Mijal Cannizaro, M2C
Nicole Kohan, M2C
Martina Ledesma, S4C
Lucrecia Márquez, S4C
Candela Kalaidjian, S5H

ESSARP Senior Forum 2014 – May 21st

What is it?
The ESF is a set of two informal debates which include an extended question time from the audience. There is a break in between debates, when students from ESSARP Schools have a chance to mingle, socialise and enjoy a, well…a three-o’clock-tea!

Where?
As in previous years, Northlands School was kind host to BDS and many other schools at their Olivos building.

Who attended?
This year, a team of two BDS students were invited to debate the motion ”Creativity is more important than Knowledge” on the proposition side. Their outstanding performance won them the debate against the Northlands’ team by a very enthusiastic show of hands. Congratulations to Juan Sosa (S6H) and Candela Kalaidjian (S5H), who worked really hard at preparing their speeches and showed quick thinking when it came to answering challenging questions from the audience.

Camila Arslanian, Melina Costanzo, Sebastián Papp, Marco Serafini, Valentina Safarian, Alejo González V., Lucas Reynoso, Sofía Terán and  Valentina Cappa accompanied the team as audience members and could enjoy the event from a more relaxing angle. The students were accompanied by their teacher, Carla Di Corleto, who received compliments for their participation and behavior. Well done to all!
