The participants role play as diplomats representing a country in a simulated session of an organ or committee of the UN. Participants have to research a country, investigate international issues and then develop solutions to world problems. During the conference, participants must employ a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of their country. This year 11 students participated: Delfina Cappa,  Alex Mysler and Matías Martino from S6, Sofía Terán, Martina Freire, Candela Kalaidjian and Malena Fronza from S5, and Mercedes Mariño, Lucas Reynoso, Ana Paula Velástegui and Valentina Cappa, from S4. The Model UN was organized by ESSARP Centre and as all the participating schools were bilingual, the debates were carried out in English. It was a wonderful experience and we profited immensely from it. We were assigned the Russian Federation and the Netherlands and discussed topics like drones and counter terrorism, rights of women and children, environment and political issues, like the crisis in Haiti and the Ukraine. The Model lasted two days, Friday June 27th. and Saturday the 28th and was held at Michael Ham Memorial College, Nordelta. The General Assembly, the Security Council, the Human Rights Commission and the ECOSOC, all were able to pass resolutions on each of the debated topics. We worked very hard, became experts on some of the topics and at the same time had fun and met girls and boys from other schools. We are already looking forward to the International Model (THIMUN) l to take place in Montevideo in August. Senior General Knowledge Competition [gallery columns="2" link="file" ids="25032,25033"] Senior General Knowledge 2014 The Competition took place on Tuesday, June 17th. The participants representing each House were the following: East: Sebastian Papp (S6H), Mercedes Mariño (S4C) and Andrés Márquez(S6L), South: Francisco Giovacchini (S6S), Manuel Arslanian (S5S) and Eugenia Balassanian (S4B), North: Juan Bautista Sosa (S6H), Malena Fronza (S5H) and Lucas Reynoso (S4C) West: Bautista Bardi (S6H), Martina Freire (S5H) and Nicolás Muises (S4A). The students had to answer around 150 questions on various topics with a special section with questions on the First World War, as we are commemorating this year the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the ‘Great War’. All Senior school was present during the competition to support their houses. They all enjoyed the event and, at the same time, learnt a lot. Educational Conference in London

0514_Visible Learning Conference "As Chairman of ESSARP, The English Speaking Scholastic Association of the River Plate, I was offered the possibility of attending an educational conference in London on the topic of “Visible Learning and Leadership”. The conference lasted four days and amongst others, keynote speeches were given by John Hattie (author of “Visible Learning for Teachers”, maximizing impact on learning) and Sir Michael Barber, a former Minister of Education in Britain and a worldwide consultant on educational reform. Visible Learning (www.visiblelearningplus.com) is “When teachers see learning through the eyes of students and when students see themselves as their own teachers”…not so distant from “Aprender a Aprender”. John Hattie is one of the most important educational researchers of today with more than 250,000 pieces of evidence/data. He shared his findings about those factors that have the greatest impact on learning: peer tutoring, feedback, teacher credibility, self-reported expectations, classroom discussion, and teacher student relationships, to name but a few. Overall, a fascinating experience backed at all times by credible research. Workshops complemented the keynote addresses and practical advice and examples were offered that demonstrated how schools had incorporated this way of working. Last year, I attended a conference on “Visible Thinking Routines”. This has been taken on board in our plans for 2014 and prepares the way to consider further strategies towards becoming a Visible Learning School." English News!

[gallery link="file" ids="24534,24536,24535,24533,24532,24531"] English Speaking Union Juan Bautista Sosa (S6H) represented BDS at the English Speaking Union National Public Speaking Competition 2014, held at the British Embassy on Tuesday 22nd April 2014. The topic this year was "Imagination is More Important than Knowledge". Juan wrote a speech entitled "What I've learned from Lego Blocks, TV Shows and my Mother", which he delivered brilliantly in front of a panel of judges and an audience which included teachers, family members and students from the 29 participating schools. Congratulations to Juan on a very insightful speech and a wonderful presentation! Debate The first round of the Acorn Interschool Debate Cup was held on Tuesday, May 6, at Oxford High School. The Senior Team, Mercedes Mariño, Lucas Reynoso and Alejo González Virgili (S4C), debated against St Catherine's. The motion was "This House Believes that peoples' right to self determination should always be respected ", and BDS had the opposition side. The Junior team, Ana Cruz(M3C), Michael Page (M3A) and Pablo Pociecha (M2C), debated against Southern Cross School. The motion was "This House Believes that children should not be allowed to participate in reality shows", and, once again, BDS had the opposition side. Seniors lost, but the Juniors won the debate by a unanimous decision of the judges! Congratulations to all of them for a job well done. ESSARP Creative Writing Competition Each year, eight BDS students participate in the ESSARP Creative Writing Competition and, more often than not, they bring home several prizes! This year’s competition was held on May 12th at St Brendan’s College.  Results are not in yet, so we’ll have to wait and see, but there is no doubt that whatever our students chose to write, it must have been exciting and imaginative. Here are their names: Facundo Cavigllia, P6 Olivia Robins, P6 Mijal Cannizaro, M2C Nicole Kohan, M2C Martina Ledesma, S4C Lucrecia Márquez, S4C Candela Kalaidjian, S5H Sofía Terán Corsini, S5L 0514_ESSARP Creative Writing Competition delegation-2 ESSARP Senior Forum 2014 – May 21st What is it? The ESF is a set of two informal debates which include an extended question time from the audience. There is a break in between debates, when students from ESSARP Schools have a chance to mingle, socialise and enjoy a, well…a three-o’clock-tea! Where? As in previous years, Northlands School was kind host to BDS and many other schools at their Olivos building. Who attended? This year, a team of two BDS students were invited to debate the motion ”Creativity is more important than Knowledge” on the proposition side. Their outstanding performance won them the debate against the Northlands’ team by a very enthusiastic show of hands. Congratulations to Juan Sosa (S6H) and Candela Kalaidjian (S5H), who worked really hard at preparing their speeches and showed quick thinking when it came to answering challenging questions from the audience. Camila Arslanian, Melina Costanzo, Sebastián Papp, Marco Serafini, Valentina Safarian, Alejo González V., Lucas Reynoso, Sofía Terán and  Valentina Cappa accompanied the team as audience members and could enjoy the event from a more relaxing angle. The students were accompanied by their teacher, Carla Di Corleto, who received compliments for their participation and behavior. Well done to all! Coming up: Two United Nations Models!

First Conference Just like last year the ESSARP Model United Nations (EMUN) Conference will take place at Michael Ham Nordelta on June 27th and 28th. BDS was assigned two delegations: the Russian Federation and The Netherlands. Lucas Reynoso, Ana Paula Velástegui, Lola Romero, Mercedes Mariño and Valentina Cappa from S4, Martina Freire, Candela Kalaidjian, Malena Fronza and Sofia Terán from S5 and Delfina Cappa, Matías Martino and Alex Mysler from S6 will be participating. The main theme of the Conference is “Latin America, changes and challenges ahead”.  The General Assembly commissions will be discussing other interesting topics like “use of drones in counter-terrorism”, “further facilitating access of Latin American countries to the markets of developed countries”, “improving human rights for those living in extreme poverty”, “economic growth, urbanization and the rights of children” amongst others. The Security Council will be discussing the question concerning Haiti, post conflict peace building and the question of the Ukraine. Second Conference (to be held in Montevideo) The topics for the above conference have been chosen in accordance with the topics to be debated at yet another conference: the First Annual Session of THIMUN (The Hague International Model United Nations) which will be held in Montevideo on 14-16 August 2014. This will be the fourth THIMUN Conference after The Hague, Singapore and Qatar. BDS will be attending this conference with six students from S5 and S6: Martina Freire, Candela Kalaidjian, Malena Fronza, Sofia Teran, Alex Mysler and Delfina Cappa. Just like EMUN, this Conference is a 3-day simulation of the United Nations for secondary students offering an excellent opportunity to expand, develop and put into practice English language skills, on an informal as well as a formal level. The object of the Conference is to seek through discussion, negotiation and debate, solutions to the various problems of the world: questions of human rights, protection of the environment, economic development, disarmament as well as the critical issue of war and peace. As this is an international conference, it will be an excellent opportunity to meet students from other countries. BDS was assigned the delegation of Guatemala. Our students will be able to discuss problems that face Latin American countries first hand. We hope that our delegates will learn a lot at both conferences and we wish them all the best!!
